Honored and Grateful: A Milestone for Severe Asthma Awareness

Published on May 20, 2025

I’m incredibly honored and humbled to share that Assemblyman Joe DeStefano, along with Alice Painter and his outstanding staff, have issued a meaningful proclamation recognizing Severe Asthma Day on May 6th, 2025. This moment is not only personally significant but also a milestone for all who live with or are impacted by severe asthma.

Since my diagnosis in 2008—after years of mischaracterization and unanswered questions—my journey has been defined by both unimaginable challenges and a growing sense of purpose. Severe asthma is not just a more intense version of traditional asthma; it is a distinct, often life-threatening condition that affects every aspect of daily life.

Over the years, I’ve endured thousands of medical interventions: from prolonged ventilator and BiPAP support to managing the harsh side effects of high-dose corticosteroids. At one point, I was on 320mg of prednisone. Today, I'm down to 7.5mg—a small but hard-earned victory. For over three decades, prednisone has been my lifeline. But this reliance underscores a sobering reality: we urgently need more effective, targeted treatment options—especially for those of us with medication-resistant or allergic forms of the disease.

This proclamation isn't just about my story. It’s for:

  • Every patient who battles for breath each day
  • Every family member who offers love and strength through the struggle
  • Every healthcare provider committed to improving our quality of life

It’s also a powerful reminder that advocacy works. One voice can make a difference. And when many voices come together, we can change the narrative around severe asthma, push for better research, and drive policy that truly supports those affected.
